Become a Fitness Instructor

Are you interested in becoming a UREC Group Fitness Instructor? Our Fitness Instructor Training (FIT) course can be your first step to teaching group classes and inspiring active, healthy living.

FIT is a combination of lecture and practical application that cover the basics of group fitness instruction:

7-Week Course

We designed this option for those with no prior experience in group fitness. Topics include:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Exercise Selection
  • Cueing and Choreography
  • Injury Prevention...and much more!

View a sample course syllabus from Spring 2021 here for more details. Registration is below at the bottom of the page.

The Fall 2021 Course will run September 1-October 13, in person.

FIT Express

Our two-day Express course is for those who have both prior instruction experience and a national certification or extensive formal training. A national certification includes a general (Group Fitness from ACE, AFAA, NASM, etc.) and/or format-specific certifications (Les Mills, Zumba, XPole, CrossFit, etc.). Formal training includes dance, martial arts, theatre, and other instructional formats. We will also accept successful completion of substantial Exercise Science-related courses with grades of B or higher as formal training. To verify your eligibility for this course, please send Joseph Martin, Coordinator for Group Fitness & Instruction, an email with your resume/CV and copies of your national certifications or formal training documentation. Registration is below at the bottom of the page.

The EXPRESS Course will comprise of unguided virtual content (completed on students' own time) and an in-person meeting. Registration for Fall 2021 is now open at the bottom of the page.

The in-person meeting for the Fall 2021 EXPRESS Course is October 16.

FIT Apprenticeship & In-House Training

During the FIT course, students will be assigned a fitness class to shadow and observe, depending on their format interests. The instructor for this class will serve as their mentor as they continue to the apprenticeship portion of the hiring process after passing the course.

The apprenticeship will prepare students for their auditions, which is the final step prior to being hired. The process usually takes another six weeks and involves further shadowing/observation, practice, and co-teaching with their mentors.

As continuing education and instructor development is important to us and our team, students will also undergo in-house training. In-house training covers format-specific knowledge and skills and further prepares students for class planning, equipment use, and instruction. Students can complete in-house training before or after completion of the FIT course. If students are interested in teaching more than one format, they will have to attend multiple trainings and complete an audition for each one. Please contact Joseph Martin to register for FREE.
